The Age of the Flapper: By 1924 the wisecracking flappers were known as much for their reckless behavior as for their style. Smoking and putting on makeup in public, the bright young things drank and danced the shimmy and bunny hug in a frenzy excitement. Women began to tape their breasts to get rid of unwanted curves, they looked youthful and boyish. The new silhouette was slender, straight up and down like a board, and became known as "la garconne". The key looks of the era were: Edwardian blouses, beading, fringe, hobble and kite dresses, velvets, furs, and dropped waists.
