Fa Yeung nin wa (In the mood for love)
A man and a woman are neighbors and start to suspect that their spouses are having an affair. This drives them close to each other, but without ever being able to be together. The romantic tension in this movie is so powerful that there's no need for an outcome. the director Wong Kar Wai has made a lot of other movies on the theme of impossible love. I would also recommend his movie Happy together, although it's probably not as romantic and therefor won't be on the list.
A middle aged American businessman, grieving his dead wife and a young French girl engaged to a filmmaker, begin a passionate affair, based solely on sex. They don't tell their names to each other but start to grow a strong bond between them. It is a complicated and desperate love, but in reality, aren't most? The film is known for the quite raw sex scenes, but it's really a beautiful story about how two people fall in love despite trying not to.
A young ordinary couple is forced to part when the boy is called for military service. This film is a musical and a visual 60's-feast. It's a simple story, but because of all the dramatic singing you can't help but shed a tear every now and then.
A teenage girl from a rougher neighborhood starts to date a rich boy at her school. Neither her nor his friends approve of the relationship and their different backgrounds keep causing problems. I can't get enough of pretty in pink. Molly Ringvald and Andrew Mccarty are so sweet (even though you secretly wish Andie would choose to be with Duckie). It's a sweet teenage love story, with the best of 80's fashion in it.
Steve is getting out of jail, he meets Sky, a naive prostitute. The two of them get into a relationship. It's not a complicated love story in itself, but it's a very special presentation and you really do route for the young lovers.
Billy gets out of prison and kidnaps Layla in order to present her as his wife Wendy to his parents. Instead of feeling threatened by the situation Layla shows affection for Billy which he has a hard time adapting to. This is a weird underground movie which is well liked by many. The twisted thing that evolves is like a retarded but charming lovechild.
