Mini adventures-Manchester ship canal

Day-out_1

In an effort to explore our surroundings me and James took a boat tour of the Manchester ship canal which sailed from outside our apartment to the Liverpool docks. The day started out cold, wet and incredibly windy, not the most encouraging weather for a day out but slowly it began to brighten up making the views more appealing as we approached Liverpool.

Day-out_2

The huge industrial swinging bridges were rather impressive too but I'm happy I took my book along for when things got a little repetative. Anywho I did take my camera to keep myself amused and document the day. Most were blurry even though we were traveling at a snails pace but still managed a few beauts which give you a feel for the day.

Day-out_4

I had never been through a lock before so it was kind of exciting navigating through each one watching the water drain away from beneath us before progressing to the next part. There were so many old lock keepers cottages and decaying buildings that looked like they had seen better days but fun to imagine how they would have been back in the day.

norwegian wood

Tokyo, the late 1960s…Students around the world are uniting to overthrow the establishment and Toru Watanabe’s personal life is similarly in tumult. At heart, he is deeply devoted to his first love, Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman. But their complex bond has been forged by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Watanabe lives with the influence of death everywhere. That is, until Midori, a girl who is everything that Naoko is not – outgoing, vivacious, supremely self-confident – marches into his life and Watanabe must choose between his past and his future.

If there is one film you see at the New Zealand Film Festival this year, make it Norwegian Wood.

My two months of big work travel adventure is finally drawing to an end and as a result will allow more time to get back to the important things in life like photographing my cats and pinching my face late at night. Also on the list: updating this sorely neglected bit of internet space. I'm also opening up our little ad side bar again now that I'm back on the blog track. If you're interested in promoting your shop and think that we'd make a nice fit let me know! We're working on a little blog re-design so the spots for July and beyond will be a tad different in size but I can fill you in on all that good stuff should you be interested.

Now that I'm kinda back around here I thought I'd ask, is anything in particular you'd like to see more of on this blog? To be honest I've been a bit relieved that I've not had time to devote to this blog cos I've not known what to do with it but I have also really missed the community and ten years of internet over-sharing is a hard habit to break (my writing skills have turned sour, you'll have to bear with me for a short while as I work this muscle back into shape). So what can I do for you, friends? What would you like? More painterly inspiration? More century old babes with mile high hair? Spotlights on my talented pals? Pippin and Bobo forever? Can I start grandpa'ing and regale you with comedic tales of my youth? (please say yes.) What can I offer here that isn't being offered a million times better elsewhere on the internet? (answer: nothing, but humour me.)

here is a mix from my favourite 8tracks user, collettesaintyves to listen to as you contemplate the future of this blog, hehe.

The Material Boy #479

Below: More designs from Christian Louboutin's Fall Winter 2011 Mens Collection... presenting the new Alfie Flats in Glitter or White...

Christian Louboutin Fall Winter 2011 Mens Alfie Flat In Glitter And White

What happens when you mate Brad Goreski's favourite bling bling Christian Louboutin Louis Crystal Flats and the 'Wonder Woman-esque' red, white and blue Superball Flats? U get the new Fall Winter 2011 Alfie Flat in Glitter (SGD1300)! These new stunning shoes from those fame red soles are imbued with attention-grabbing glamour and some 'kick-ass' fun. The high cut trainers also features a buckle detail on the back and embellished with lots of sparkle (in the form of silver glitter and metallic gold leather) amongst the red, white and blue colour combination. Alfie Flat will surely make Wonder Woman green with envy and Superman dashing at superspeeds to clamour for one:-) For me, I just love Alfie for its high glamour and huge statement making ability. Be a superstar in your own right when you wear these!

However, if this glitter version is too much for your taste, you can always settle for more subdued versions in White leather with red trimmings (SGD1300) or brown leather mixed with leopard haircalf. Rest assured Christian Louboutin never disappoints when it comes to choices.

The Alfie Flats will be a great alternative for owners of Louis and Rantus flats or for new fans who wants something different with a higher cut. Another definite must-have for Fall Winter 2011!

Make Do & Mend

Rationing enforced an era of obligatory minimalism when the Second World War broke out. From 1939-1946 rationed restricted consumerisms; and the extravagant silver screen star look of the 30s was now viewed as ostentatious, vulgar, and unpatriotic. Luxurious fabrics like silk and nylon were used for parachutes and mattresses became life jackets. Rayon, viscose, and blackout material were the fabrics left to use on clothes. Designers on both sides of the Atlantic were called up to do their part, and the British Board of Trade drafted a group of designers to create a complete civilian “utility” wardrobe to be mass produced. Restrictions banned wasteful cutting and excess trimmings, so hemlines became shorter and dresses became more fitted. Thus the ready-to-wear designer took over the couturiers, during the war. Women also rolled up their sleeves and went to work, while the men fought overseas. Women who worked the land wore corduroy trousers and dungarees, and bundled their hair into a colorful scarf.  Women’s daywear was quick and to the point, with sharp-shouldered jackets and knee length skirts. And as the war continued, women concocted a new mix and match blueprint to make the most of their wardrobes. Suits allowed for mixing and matching shirts and skirts. As, materials such as straw ran out, women improvised with scraps of dresses to make miniature doll-sized hats which were worn perched on the head. Gals also wore heavy shoes, often with wooden soles to save on leather. In fact Vogue patriotically focused on ‘Do it yourself’ fashion and ‘Make Do and Mend’, advising sewing different colored ribbons into pleats of skirts, and adorning black dresses with sequins and paisley pockets and turning maternity capes into reefer jackets. Women were essential in the war effort and joined the Navy WAVES, the Army WACs and WASPs, Army nurses, the Coast Guard SPARS, and the Marine Corps Womens Reserve
