Granny Takes A Trip

Granny Takes a Trip was an iconic boutique opened in the 1960's in the Kings Road, London, by Nigel Waymouth and Sheila Cohen. The shop brought a radical, iconoclastic approach to the fashion and style of the time. With an ambience that was a mixture of New Orleans bordello and futuristic fantasy, one would experience a heady feeling of deja vu within its walls, an ambience at once retro and au courant. Marbled patterns papered the walls, providing an exotic backdrop to the rails, which always carried an assortment of brightly coloured clothes. Lace curtains draped the doorway of the only changing room, and a beaded glass curtain hung over the entrance at the top of steps, which led on into the shop. In the back room, an art deco Wurlitzer blasted out a selection of favoured music. The shop also became famous for its constantly changing facade. At one time the entire front was painted with a giant pop-art face of Jean Harlow. Overnight, that was replaced by an actual 1948 Dodge saloon car which appeared to crash out from the window and onto the forecourt. Over the next three years contrasting changes such as this took place at regular intervals. By the end of the decade, the partnership began to lose momentum. Nigel Waymouth was becoming increasingly more involved in his poster and album cover design work, and John Pearse left for Italy to work with his friends in The Living Theatre Group. Sheila Cohen continued to keep Granny operating but found it too demanding a task without her former partners. In late 1969, Cohen passed on the shop to two New Yorkers, Gene Krell and his partner, Marty. Granny Takes A Trip remained open for another four years, until it closed in 1973.

i'm the fatty today.

After The Parool, have to scan it in, I'm now, with Mardy, in Elsevier Magazine, on a piece about the kids these days in town and bla, shot by the always amazing Arie Versluis. However, I prob. took it waaaay too serious, looking at my face and pose, plus I also look like a little fatty haha. Time for a better pose and a few situps, haha. Anyway, fun is fun and I had to post it! It's a really nice item.

Oh, and what the fuck did I put on my neck, haha! x

Celia Birtwell

Celia Birtwell, was muse to David Hockney and her partner Ossie Clark. Celia is one of the most influential textile designers of all time. She is described as the face that launched a thousand prints. Celia studied Textile Design in Manchester, where in 1959 she met the fashion designer Ossie Clark, whom she married in 1969.Theirs was an almost perfect marriage of style, and their work together defined the era. The collaboration began with a 1966 collection for the Quorum boutique in London, which they shared with the designer Alice Pollock. It was the Clarks who began the modern catwalk show: the previous procession of modelled clothes was put to music, the London glitterati was invited, and the shows became events. Birtwell worked at home designing textiles for Clark, who would use his skill in cutting and understanding of form, together with her knowledge of fabrics and textures to produce haute couture for the emerging 60’s culture. This included work for the Rolling Stones and Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, as well as Pattie Boyd, Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger, Verushka, Paloma Picasso, Talitha Getty and numerous other international celebrities.

We're losers, but we didn't bleach our hair.

I just realized that almost every weekend my family and I go to our cottage, which minimizes the number of posts a LOT. We'll be going for like a month in the summer. AHHH. And we are going this weekend too. In like an hour. Baha.

Anywho, remember Claire from the last photoshoot post? She and I hung out the other day, and got a few pictures of our lameness. Lamity? Lameability? Well just the same, I thought I would post the pictures. I almost did an outfit post on what I wore that day but these are more fun!Yes, I normally wear glasses. I choose to take them off in my outfit photos where I'm supposed to look at least a little older and more photogenic, haha. The one on the far left is my outfit, and that odd blue underwear looking thing is shorts, haha. I actually got that large sweater from Stephanie of Fashion Robot!
I wear: Sweater, Stephanie; Tights, childhood closet; Gray socks, Walgreens. Ats right, you heard me!
Claire wears: Shirt, threadless.com; Jeans, Target.
My legs are stubs. Meh.

Oh, and I swear I am almost done stalking Lily Allen, but-she bleached her hair, and I feel the need to give my two cents about it, especially when it cost her quite a lot. I really don't like the look for her.....GoFugYourself had a great post about it. I love Lily, but I can't help but agree with every fug those ladies fugged about. Mistake!

Show of hands!

Who will be SATC-ing it this weekend?

I've purposely avoided all the reviews and as many photos as humanly possible so I'll be (somewhat) surprised by whatever happens when I catch the new Sex and the City movie this weekend. I couldn't get tickets for tonight, so the girls and I will be taking it in tomorrow—along with fruity cocktails and poufy skirts, of course. (What? It's no weirder than the kids who get dressed up every time there's a new Star Wars! Hmmm… though perhaps that's not the most helpful comparison.) Still, in summary: Wheeee!

I bought this dress a few months ago at CafĂ© Society. I think it was luck that day because I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it hanging there! 1920’s butter yellow lace perfection = DREAM DRESS! And it did not wipe out my checking account either!
For the past few years I’ve made it a tradition to buy a special dress for my birthday. This one is definitely, definitely 2008’s dress!

And more bits and pieces of my room – it’s still a mess, I decided to get soul food last Friday instead of cleaning, but this weekend is the weekend! I’ll probably try and list some treasures from my room on etsy this weekend too. I’m trying so hard to cutback on clutter!

The silly bowling pin was my purchase from the Lamp Shop last weekend. (This is its temporary home though) And the bag I bought from Bobby’s a few weekends ago, I haven’t worn it yet, but I love looking at it!

<3 Mom

i'm currently sitting on the toilet locked in my bathroom with my dog.
I was sitting happily at the kitchen table enjoying a dinner of carrots and baba ganouj when the wind knocked over stef's "can bag" in the backyard and i screamed at the top of my lungs and sprinted here, somehow having the reflex to pick up my laptop.
luckily my dog loves me enough to follow my lead.
i dont know how long i will stay in here until my nerves calm down, i sincerely wish more people were online at 10pm on a gorgeous 22 degree thursday night. ugh.

on another note, two weeks from saturday mike gets home. this is nothing but good news of course, but there are so many things i wanted to do while he was gone, so i need the weather to improve so i can do them.
estrogen highs will be my drug of choice for the next little bit, and anyone who wants to give into the craving with me is more than invited. no peer pressure.

boston was fun. mom was embarassingly tourist-y but its one of thousands of reasons to love her.
millions even.

I LOVE MY MOM!

A little bit of cyber-concern

Well, slap my name to the incredibly lengthy list of fashion bloggers and blog readers who have been missing Agathe of Style Bytes for more than a month now. I was hoping some of the impassioned pleas thus far might end in a resolution – but all I can find is that she's been spotted around her neighborhood, looking happy and well and characteristically stylish. (Which is a good thing! But we here on the Internet demand answers! Or at least goodbyes…) I got a little more curious today when I noticed there was an error on my bloglines feed and realized her entire site had been taken down. Luckily, I always save the photos of my favorite pictures online for style inspiration – including this bow-tied string of pearls she sported awhile back. Love it! And miss it!

I'll add my voice to the mounting wail: Agathe! Where are you? Will I ever see you and your amazing tiered vintage skirt again?

{Update} Susie calls for an end to the Agathe-hunt and we'll go along with that. It's hard -- because, after years on the internet together, it seems like we're friends! We were there for her wedding! And the adoption of Molvin! And the 20s-themed parties! And so much more... -- but I guess Internet friends are not quite real friends, and so we will wish Agathe all the fashiony best and turn our attention elsewhere. Like to shoes...

buy the chloe book ya'll!

The New York Times wrote a piece on the collection Chloe Sevigny made for Opening Ceremony. They also write that most of the stores don't have the collection anymore, since it's sold out for over more than 95% worldwide! Thats why this book popped out, or maybe it didn't, but I find it almost too perfect, time-wise, not to: 2000 copies, hard to get, amazon is the best way, 65bucks and a lot of fun. It's set to mix and match, have the entire collection afterall and get on the journey Chloe wants you to take.

Hello, Chloe made this, sort of, so you better like it. Haha. x

the japanese roel.

Roen Fall/Winter 2008-2009.
While talking to Richard I ran into Roel again. And by Roel I mean the Japanese brand with crazy ass designer Hiromu Takahara. I almost forgot how amazing he is in making coats and suits. And the styling, it could have done way more sophisticated, but the looks he showing on the runway, with the hair and image and all, haha. It's cool.

I should lend some items anytime soon.. yeah.
