The New Girl In Town

Well I am new here.... Lately I've been really interested in fashion, and I like to make binders and slideshows of "high-fashion" modeling and designs. I'd like to know of neat websites and magazines, so comments are welcome. I plan on posting pictures in the future, but for now, I'm just getting started. Yours truly, Tavi

D.C. gets all spiffy for spring

I got way excited when I saw a few of these flower-fied street signs driving through Georgetown on Friday and now they're all over the internet. Pretty!

We are all just a bit tuckered out over here.

{Of course, Peeve and Commander Robot are always up for a long cuddly snooze. But I'm very ready to join them.}

Just a quick note to say hi (hi!) and also sorry to be a bit slow around here this week. I've been busy – a good busy, but busy nonetheless – and my Internet time is always the first thing that gets cut back. Things should return to normal next week (for starters, I've really got to show you the booty from my marathon thrifting trip this week!). But now, if you'll excuse me, there are some very pretty cherry blossoms that need to be oohed and ahhed over.

People Only See What They Are Prepared To See

I love it how the photos on Facehunter make you think differently about fashion and give you new perspectives on trends and themes in general. Here are three (fairly recent) photos from Yvan that made me think and in short, inspired me. (PS. There is also a common thread. Can you guess what it is?)
Best hair ever! I love the little details, how the gloves subtlely match the socks and how their is a similar brown tone between the shoes, the umbrella handle and the bag strap. It's just such a well put together outfit.
I love the simplicity of it and yet it is so eye-catching. Yellow tights may be the best accessory ever (but are tights technically accessory?). I also appreciate that this could probably be recreated with purchases from any chain store but she still makes it her own.

My favourite outfit! I was super doubtful when I heard all the hype surrounding 'sheer' being one of the new trends for 2008, but this is perfect. It's got a sort of chic 'white rabbit' vibe to it. Cute but not 'cutesy'.

Finally, the common thread? None of them are looking at the camera. Everyone say 'Myspace'!

I Was Born Modest; Not All Over, But In Spots

Thrift finds: I keep forgetting to post them! These are the latest, worn together... I always seem to buy things that form instant outfits. The spotted wiggle dress is made out of really soft cotton and seems to be home-made. It fits me almost too well, which is something that never happens. The red crochet vest is something that I have been looking for forever. I threw the two together and accessorised with navy ribbed tights and brown belt and boots.

Detail shot of the vest and belt:
MY BOOTS! Oh how I adore them... Sadly, this is the third time the sole has come off and I feel as though I am fighting a losing battle...

I am so bringing the twist back as a photo pose. Too much fun.
I thought that long days with nothing to do at a new job would be deadly without the internet, instead i've decided its a pretty refreshing change.
I managed to finish a book I started at Christmas time and get a lot more introspective than this stupid blog leads me to believe i'm being.
i'm pretty excited about some big decision i have made this week regarding my near future, and i'm also pretty excited about the baked goods isabel and i prepared tonight.
miraculously her kitchen and our clothes are intact...
my dog is a bit on the crazy side from having been locked in my room all day but i just jogged around the block twice with her and she seems to be calming down.
i on the other hand am pretty stressed out about this stupid pay pal situation i got myself into.
CLEARLY an amateur, i clicked "make payment" to the seller off whom i bought three items. i went to bed that night happy that my paypal would automatically take the funds out of the bank account which i had linked it to. the next day someone informed me i had to transfer the funds from my account to paypal before the payment would go through to the seller. so in a moment of panic, seeing the payment was marked as unclear on pay pal, i did just that.
unfortunately today when i went to go check on the whole thing, BOTH payments had gone through my account (the one that pay pal DOES automatically take from my linked account, AND the one i transferred myself) problem is my dead beat self didnt have enough to make two 60$ payments from my chequings at that time and somehow now ive wound up with NO money in my pay pal, i BAD name on ebay AND two NSF fees adding up to 70$ in my bank account. i dont even know who i could possibly cry to to get this situation fixed.
i've already emailed the seller to explain how much of a retard i am and promise to remedy the situation right away, and tomorow i have to call RBC and pay pal to fix some kind of deal with them.

on another money note, dan apparently no longer has any mail for me contrary to his original response in which he named off the companies who had sent me mail to my old address (which he is now living with). Said mail corresponded perfectly with the T4's i was supposed to be receiving in order to complete my income tax. last night he told me that he never had any mail for me. now i have to go to the government and wait another 6 years before i can file this fucking shit.

ugh. money is stupid. i wish i was in the era of the barter system, im pretty sure i could find some good beaver skins to trade you for the new couches i just bought.

luckily the couches look really good.
COME OVER AND SIT ON THEM WITH ME THEY DONT SMELL LIKE CURRY ANYMORE!!

im officially going on hiatus this weekend and taking refuge at my parents house.

if i dont answer my phone its by choice.

Bringing back the bonnet, so to speak

We're not really church-goers, but I was happy to use Easter as a reason to get a little dressed up in some bright spring-y finery and head over to IHOP for a plate of pancakes. (Apparently, this was not an original idea. IHOP was packed! So we tried the Silver Diner. Also incredibly packed! Finally, fueled by some delicious Murky Coffee, we ended up with Big Breakfasts at McDonald's. Sad, true, but kind of fun and amusing too. Plus, there is not much that beats a buttery McDonald's biscuit.)

Anyway, I was just happy to have the chance to debut my self-made flower headpiece (fashioned from items found at the Spotlight craft store in Singapore), even if it was mostly to the other patrons at a random Arlington McDonalds. I also sported it all around our post-breakfast exploration of the Courthouse flea market, where it earned lots of compliments from various vendors, one of whom commended me on "bringing back the Easter bonnet."

The headpiece was a bigger hit than the thrifting (I left empty-handed after Mike convinced me that I did not want to pay $7 for an old red Viewmaster, even though I kind of did). I'm already thinking of where I might wear it next. Maybe to the Son Volt show next month? Seems like the perfect opportunity to rock some flowery headgear, quite literally.

If it's not big bows, it's big collars!

{Er, you'd tell me if I was becoming way too predictable, right?}

It's no surprise that I instantly loved the collection of detailed yet simple spring coats from Montreal-based fashion line Soia & Kyo, found via Spray Glue. This Lotta-S asymmetrical trench ($265) is my absolute favorite. Clean lines, slightly quirky, pretty much perfect.

The Hills: One redeeming moment in the whole silly mess

Toward the conclusion of The Hills' premiere last night, my reaction was something along the lines of: I wasted an hour* of my night on this? {And, to be clear: I never, ever say things like that. I am, after all, a girl who actually owns her own copy of the Britney classic Crossroads and still watches every time it's on TV. Ditto for just about every teen movie ever made, including a slew that star Lindsay Lohan. And also that Mary Kate and Ashley chased-around-NYC-by-Eugene-Levy disaster. Okay, now I'm just embarrassing myself.}

In any case, I was about to call it all an overly contrived wash (well, except for those Crillon Ball debutante dresses; those were incredible) until Lauren leapt off her hairy Paris suitor's trusty Vespa and displayed the back of her coat as they awkwardly hugged goodbye.

And there was a *bow*. And it was **amazing**. And really, it saved the whole hour for me. Of course, I had to immediately break out the digital camera and the Tivo pause feature and try to snap it as best I could so we could gush together.

Plus, did you catch how the coat had such a great swingy shape? Oh no? Well then, it's your lucky day because I stopped my Tivo for that too.

*Well, actually, it was more like two hours wasted, since I also watched the old episodes they showed leading up to the premiere. Plus, I also recorded the Mariah Carey after-performance, which I haven't watched yet but I'm sure I will eventually succumb to, just because Mariah was so ridiculous during the pre-show interviews and I'm kinda curious. And so that's like another 20 minutes of silly fluff on top of everything else. Which is a teensy bit depressing. But, of course, I'll totally watch it again next week.

Couldn't help myself: Dwell for Target

Dwell Studio's Target adult and baby housewares collections have gotten some mixed reviews since they debuted, but I have to say that I totally love their new table linens collection. I jumped all over them in the Target store last week before I realized they were Dwell-designed -- really, that perfect robin's egg blue gets me every time! -- and probably would have bought the fun reversible table runner and/or the placemats if they matched my décor in any way whatsoever. (As it happens, they do not. And not even in a good cool-clashing kind of way. I know, I've given it a lot of thought.)

Instead, I settled for a set of the dishtowels and am considering the tablecloth too. Very purdy, and definitely not very pricey -- just how I like it.

Nothing says "Easter" like some quality thrifting!

I spent a good chunk of my weekend either working on an upcoming assignment or taking a work break at my friendly Northern Virginia thrift stores… and also taking a lot of wrong turns trying to drive to my friendly Northern Virginia thrift stores. How many times can one drive past the Lincoln Memorial before it gets a little old? I'm at about six times, and I still get a kick out of it, fortunately.

Anyway, I'll recap my vintage booty soon enough, but in the meantime, can I just say how I now have to carefully scour every thrift store's children's book section, in the hopes of finding a copy of Henri's Walk to Paris? It's illustrated by legendary graphic designer Saul Bass and the gorgeously colorful pages got seriously stuck in my head after I saw it on Design*Sponge earlier this month.

Sadly, no copies have yet to be miraculously discovered.

the chloe ladies.

Chloë Sevigny on the new cover of Nylon.

In the middle, but with the other Chloé ladies; Anja Rubik and Clémence Poésy. These three blonde beauties are the spring faces for the latest Chloé perfume aswell, so it's nice seeing them together somewhere else then on the ads, haha. Three gorgeous ladies, and in the middle Chloë, haha, all wearing Chloé. Oh well, blabla.. Adore it! x

A Bird Doesn't Sing Because It Has An Answer, It Sings Because It Has A Song.

Yasmin Sewell had an enormous amount of talent. She just had no idea how to express it. Her love was for fashion and clothing, but in her own words, she ‘couldn’t sew, wasn’t happy in magazines and was a crap stylist.’
The answer came when she was in London and had an idea for a clothing store which she opened with her business partner, Bridget Papoyans. The store, Yasmin Cho, went on to become a huge success. As an ex-buyer for Browns in England, she had a say in what comes into the stores and was often captured in photographs by Yvan from Facehunter. Her next venture is sure to be a great as the ones that preceded it.
Her clean-styled outfits, accessorized by ridiculous high heels and her distinctive haircut, radiate serenity. The lesson that I think we should all learn from Yasmin Sewell is that if you love something, never stop trying to express it.
