Like Clockwork...

If you've been sitting at home wondering what was coming next in headwear after the turban...look no further. Hipsters everywhere are referencing Clockwork Orange on this one. Clémence Poésy with Karl Lagerfeld, Coco Rocha on the cover of Numero and one of The Facehunter's fine specimens all sporting the distinguished black bowler.

PS. Don't you just love the shot of Coco Rocha? I can't get enough of it!

What Is Life? It Is The Flash Of A Firefly In The Night.

I love headdresses. It's gone past headbands, past hats. Headdresses. Native American, 1920's, the bigger the better. I know why... it's because I love to have a bit of ridiculous in my outfits but more so, it's because I've completely fallen in love with Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes. I'll admit when I first saw 'Bat for Lashes' in the AdoreVintage forums I thought it had something to do with a Maybelline mascara advertisement. Yeah, I'm pretty lame. But the reality is much better.

Tiny, miniscule bio: Bat for Lashes is an amazing, atmospheric band from the UK fronted by the awesome Natasha Khan. For more information and a taste of their CD, Fur and Gold (I even find the title of their album exciting!), go to their Myspace.

But on with the pictures!

I love the drama, the face paint, the feathers. It's fun, that's what style should be. Thank you, Natasha Khan for standing out from all from others.

Halloween is coming up... two guesses for who I'm dressing up as...

It Is In Spending Oneself That One Becomes Rich.

I'm constantly looking for something new, something that will satisfy my quest for knowledge. Lately, I've been fascinated with the class systems that are present in many different countries, both distinct and subtle. The English class system is particularly interesting. But wait, before you leave the page thinking I'm going to bore you, there is a fashion slant to this. In particular, looking at the American class system.

In previous decades, instead of celebrities as we know them today, the masses instead had film stars (much more refined) and socialites. Socialites were a graceful, refined breed and were very, very chic. Need some proof?

Left to right: CZ Guest, Babe Paley & Dorothy Hearst.

Babe Paley again. Smoking is not cool in anyway, but this has to be the chic-est picture ever. The red lips, the pale blue, the masses and masses of jewellry, its a simply beautiful picture.

That was then. The socialites now though, I'm a bit more doubtful about. Lydia Hearst, Tinsley Mortimer, Fabiola Beracasa, Arden Wohl, Olivia Palermo, their style is at best, okay. I don't know perhaps they don't wear enough jewellry.

I'm Back Quicker Than A Returning Boomerang.

After reading Agathe's post today in which she questioned why certain people are so interested in clothing whereas others have no real interest, I came to thinking about my own obsession with clothing. Where did it come from? I have no idea but I think it has to do with the fact that I didn't really fit in with the 'sporty' girls at my school and that I have always been fascinated with colours, textures and sparkles. Mostly colours, though. I was one of the kids who loved to read all the colours on the side of that really big pack of Crayola pencils. Vermillion, emerald, violet, I was completely obsessed.

Clothing I think was probably the best way for me to express this creativity because not only was it with me all the time, it also had the ability to make other people smile. This is probably the only question I ask now when getting dressed for myself - Does this make me smile? I enjoy making people happy and if my coloured tights are a bright spot in their dull day... that's awesome.

I found the outfits in this post from several different street style sites. Every single one of them brought a smile to my face: the bright colours, the crown and the bat necklace. Fashion = happiness?

Who's That Girl - Part 2

Another Canuck to add to your own personal "top-model" list. This one hails from Edmonton, Alberta and is appropriately hotter than a cattle prod. She was a virtual unknown at the beginning of 07 and in 10 short months has done the cover of Italian Vogue, shot with Mert & Marcus, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber and Testino. Additionally she stormed the spring shows and for the cherry on top -- did both the D&G and Prada resort campaigns. Expect a coup d'etat when the spring campaigns roll around.

All Human Evil Comes From Inability To Sit Still In A Room.

I apologise again for my absences, which are becoming more and more frequent. I suck. Between holidays (away from my computer) and studying for exams (where I won't blog or do anything constructive but I will procrastinate and play tetris for three hours), I've been busy.

And it seems that so has everyone else in the blogging world. There have been so many awesome iniatives started by my fellow bloggers that I am quite literally jumping for joy. Never before has there been such positive fashion movements that relate to supporting each other, sustainability and promoting creativity. Some of my personal favourites include:

  • Aarika's (a.k.a The Happy Hippie) magnificent W.E.I.O challenge. This is seriously applaudable. Basically, it is an experiement in wearing everything you own. It's the smartest way to get the full use of your wardrobe, save money and try different looks. Get all the information here - The Happy Hippie - W.E.I.O. You also get some awesome badges such as:

  • Independant Fashion Bloggers is a project started by Jennine of The Coveted (another amazing blog). It offers advice and general information for fashion bloggers such as Blog Building and also has inciteful pieces discussing topics such as Magazines vs Blogs.

  • Then there are the amazing newcomers to the blogging scene whose blogs and enthusiasm I have fallen in love with. My personal favourite is Smaggle Style, a lovely Australian blogger whose daily outfits and etsy finds having me returning every day.

So while I dislike being away for sooooo long, it was nice to return and find such lovely surprises waiting for me. Finally, I'd just like to show you this wonderful, wonderful picture from Stilinberlin, which has to be one of my favourite street style sites.

I think that this lovely lady is everything I want to be.

PS. Sorry about the layout. I lost my old one trying to make some changes and then it was nearly 11 and I had an exam the next day, so I had to whip this one up in about 15 minutes. Hopefully, a more streamlined one will be on the way.

Carine Follows Suit....

Carine takes her own advice during Paris Fashion Week and sports some serious suiting. I'm not sure if we've seen shoulders that strong (on the street) since 1988...but somehow it's looking fresh and fan-tas-ti-que! All hail the Queen!

Picture from NY Times.

Who's That Girl?

One of the newest (and strongest) faces out of Canada this season was that of the solemn looking Kori Richardson. She did the shows in NY and Milan but hit Paris hard walking for Balenciaga, Anne Demeulemeester, YSL, Chanel, Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Nina Ricci and Louis Vuitton! Any bets on campaigns for the coming season??

2. Ghesquière's sporstwear couture vibe done in a frenzy of florals.

3. Paulo Melim Andersson's breezy regatta-like collection. Geometric panels, sheer, floating, silhouettes and smudged, painterly prints.

Where the Cool Girls Go...

In case you were wondering - the Chloe fragance launch party. And while I'm at it - I'm also wondering why is it that French actresses are just so much cooler than their American counter parts?

Ludivine Sagnier, Clémence Poésy, Mélanie Thierry, Elisa Tovati, Ellen von Unwerth, Mélanie Laurent and The Kills songstress Alison Mosshart.

OK fine - Ellen von Unwerth is German and Alison Mosshart might be American (but not an actress - therefore she's exempt) but they're still pretty damn cool girls.

Hermès SVP!

There is something about an Hermès scarf. It's the true definition of a classic. It's one of the few items that you could wear at both 20 or 60 - and look equally fabulous. The scarves themselves also almost get better with age; the older patterns become more difficult to find and therefore all the more covetable.

While in London 2 weeks ago I stumbled upon a vintage clothing show purchased this lovely Mors & Gourmettes Hermès scarf. (Pardon the wrinkles I wore it to work today and was too lazy to iron it!)

Of course I had to google Mors & Gourmettes when I got home and I quickly learned that the pattern was designed in 1961 by Henri de Origny and that the name loosely translates to "chains and bits". I had already made plans to wear it with my school girl blazer and skinny jeans... a la this stylish femme on my favorite French blog une fille comme moi. I like how she has knotted it irreverantly and paired it with a classic blazer and less serious denim mini.

What are your classics?

Style It: Winter Edition

Ok so maybe the weather is not exactly co-operating with my new Fall wardrobe (being that it was 25 degrees Celcius today) however; I have no doubt that the classic Montreal winter is coming and when it does I will take inspiration from Balenciaga's Pre-Fall 07 collection (minus the yeti boots).

Of course what I'm loving is the mix: pretty blouses under chunky sweater vests, serious ankle boots, leggings (I'm plugging my ears to the collective groan), hints at something ethic - keep it tailored - belt last seasons tunic dresses and pile on wintery tights and hats.

Meantime -- until the weather turns I'll be channeling mean girls....
