Pierre's Other Art

If I happened to own a pair of Pierre Hardy shoes, I may feel possessed to hang them on the wall. Seriously. At the very least I would place them lovingly on a prominent shelf so that all that entered may enjoy them.

Apparently Pierre already considered this? Who knew? This is my kind of art.

Sports-Day at Marni

Finalement, I'm back in Montreal. I had a whirl-wind week in Paris and unfortunately left just before the shows began. I did manage to make it to some of the glorious shops though - where I had a serious Marni "moment".

I've never really considered myself a "sporty" kind of girl - my fashion is usually firmly planted in the "feminine chic" category (whatever that is). But somehow I found myself in Marni staring longingly at a heavy, black nylon jacket, with a thick elastic belt and lantern sleeves. And then I had the "moment". Suddenly all the baby-dolls, tunic dresses and such seemed positively wrong...and sporty seemed so right!

I was then quite pleased to see that Consuelo Castiglioni was feeling the same for Fall! Anyone else in a sports-day mood???

Grey Skies Are Just Clouds Passing Over

Everywhere I look... grey. Every single item of clothing I want to buy.... grey. It's gotten to the stage where I don't buy things that I really really like because grey on grey is something I'm planning on saving for my 50's. It's pretty annoying, actually. My favourite pieces of clothing are my grey t-shirt with carousel horses and my grey sweater from Sportsgirl. I also have grey shorts, two different types of grey trousers and several grey singlets. Maybe even a cardigan, as well. At the moment I want to buy -
  • A grey cardigan with purple trim from Target

  • A grey vest from Jeanswest

  • A pseudo-hoodie cardigan from Jeanswest (also grey)

  • A grey wool dress from Just Jeans

  • Several grey button-downs from K-Mart

*All of these items come only in grey.

What am I to do? Do I submit to the grey-ness or do I fight it? I have no idea. But here are some other grey items for your viewing pleasure...

Pinafore - Kate Hurst, jacket - Fred Flare, shoes - unknown.

PS. I feel I should have made some pun or joke about Grey's Anatomy in this post, but I cannot think of anything appropriate or slightly witty. Sorry for the oversight.

Your Bullets Cannot Harm Me! My Wings Are Like A Shield Of Steel!

I am all for ethical, sustainable fashion. I think that everyone who lives on Earth takes and we could all give a little back. For example, I really admire Stella McCartney and her dedication to her beliefs. It is really rare that a person would not compromise their choices to the point which Stella does. Her clothing manages to be environmentally-friendly and beautiful.

It’s encouraging that other designers and fashion stores have also begun to contribute to saving the environment. Lee (the denim brand) has t-shirts and denim made from organic cotton as does Mavi. Tree of Life provides employment opportunities in struggling areas. Trashbags (trashbags.com.au) creates accessories from recycled materials. However, the ecologically-friendly brand I’m most excited about is Bird. This organization creates gorgeous clothing, is climate-neutral, run on solar power and all designs are hand-painted and hand-sewn. That’s what I call impressive.

Ever Alert For The Call To Action!

Bananaman was awesome, hey?

However, this post is about my girl crush.... Hilary Duff. Ms. Duff's style has indeed 'metamorphosised' in recent years, becoming edgier and less vomit-inducing. This seemed to happen at the same time as she lost a lot of weight and got new teeth. Lots of people say that she looks terrible now and that they preferred the old 'healthy' Hilary. I disagree. The fact that I like her more now has nothing to do with the fact that she got skinnier, she just started to pay more attention to fashion and wearing clothes that were in style and suited her. The same sort of thing happened with Nicole.

But yeah, Hilary. She's rad. The end.

Suppressed Memories..

I love lurex and metallics, for that matter. I have trouble comprehending why people consider these things heinous. Maybe they are only appropriate for a certain age group but most things if people put in the effort can be made age appropriate. Except things like crochet and Crocs. Which no one should wear. Ever.

So last Friday I went out on the town, partying it up as some may say. Prior to the night beginning Alex and I went to Hackett's house and playing Wii sports. I am a gun at pitching but no so much at batting. Then, there was the final OC ever party, which was interesting because by the end of the last two episodes (they were shown back to back here) the only outcome which would have satisfied everyone is if the whole of Orange County died. That clearly didn't happen so there was quite the uproar.

Then there was Frank's 19th. Shout out to Frank, he's a pretty rad dude. His party was like one of those crazy high school parties where heaps of stuff gets trashed. I felt really old even though I'm not. That doesn't make much sense. Then Alex and I walked 3/4 of the way to my house, which was a mistake and I regretted later (it was a lo0o0o0o0o0ong way).

My outfit for the evening was a fairly gross silver lurex t-shirt dress over a black long sleeve shirt, black argyle tights and red socks. Needless to say walking home was tragic. Speaking of tragic, I still have reservations about metallic tights, especially white ones. I don't think that anyone can really pull that off, but hey, surprise me.

Paris, Je T'aime Aussi!

Dearest Glossy Ones -
I'm off tonight to the city of lights for the bi-annual Premiere Vision fabric show. I am bringing my beloved MacBook - but as per usual that pesky day job will probably get in the way. I will do my best to bring you home a few morsels from Paris!
Bisoux, The Glossy Ed.

PS. Still mourning my V&R shoes...they would've been SO perfect for Paris:(

Angels and Insects

If you've been following this space, you probably know that I'm an Erdem fan.

Monday did not disappoint. For his fourth season Erdem didn't deviate too much from the charming pieces he's become known for - stunning French lace trims and his beautiful prints. Some of my personal favorites included the striped butterfly prints (especially in the satin mini-dress!), layers of midnight blue satin ruffles, grey satin and lace and high-waisted navy mini-skirts.

Which shows were your favorites from London?

Death of V&R Shoes

Dear Victor & Rolf,

I stopped and stared in disbelief when I saw what I thought was the heel cap from my brand new Victor& Rolf shoes laying in the middle of my bedroom floor. I mean these lovelies were made in ITALY after all and such craftsmanship is usually infallible! How did that pesky cap come off I wondered?? Not to mention the tiny gold nail that was used to pound the cap tightly into the highly crafted, rare-wood, conical heel? Now THAT was truly hard to mistake! However, as I bent down to pick up the cap, the carnage to my left caught my eye! NO! It cannot be! And yet - it was.

It was laying on it's side, no longer able to stand on it's majestic peg. My beloved V&R's, purchased in NY less than a month ago...with one lovely heel... chewed off beyond all recognition...literally splinters!

Victor, please don't blame her! She obviously loved them too! They were the first V&R's that she ever layed her eyes on. You can't blame a girl for being star-struck. I had honestly never seen anything quite so lovely myself! Even the Russian salesgirl in NY seemed upset parting with them.

Rolf, I promise to be forever loyal if you could please! send me a replacement heel! The shoe itself seems to have walked away from the horrific ordeal seemingly unscathed - mind you - we will both need therapy to heel the deeper wounds. (Spotty too...)

Awaiting your positive response, The Glossy Editor.

PS. If any of you Glossy readers have a V&R connection and an ounce of empathy....

Are you Flicking Yer Bean for Agyness Deyn?

The New York designers certainly were - she stormed the runways of Donna Karan, DKNY, Anna Sui, Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler, Narciso Rodriguez, Isaac Mizrahi (still trying to forget that one), Zac Posen AND Tommy Hilfiger. Now with her own HOH slogan tee...who can stop her? She's done major covers and even the spring 07 Armani campaign. I'm only left wondering where was she at Marc Jacobs?

Who else is on your top 10 list??

If All The World Were Paper..

So, recently the cobrasnake, visited my fair country. However, it was for a Mickey Avalon tour (ehh..) and the cost to travel down to New South Wales probably wouldn't have been worth it.

Looking on the site, I depressingly find out that Australian hipsters/wannabes dress exactly the same as L.A. kids. Don't we have any pride? Any individuality? Sometimes. Look at sass and bide and Kit Willow, Elke Kramer. Those are people with style. Too bad Mark Hunter didn't take any pictures of them.

This was the only picture that I loved. I don't know why but $10 says it's the bow. The plaid dress isn't horrible either.
PS. I really hope that she is from Australia. Assuming that all pictures in between RVCA Downunderpants and Sydney Bandits were taken here, she is. If not, I'm a little disappointed.

Crazy Days and Neon Nights

I love neon. And I totally loved before Christopher Kane was on the scene, so there!! I spent my entire 8th grade year dressed in a neon tie-dyed shirt, but thankfully no pictures of me in said shirt nor the shirt itself have lived to tell the tale.

However, this picture of my nineteenth birthday did. I had an eighties party and pretty much spent the whole night going beserk. It was awesome. So here are myself and my best girls living it up.
(Man, I love photoshop.) I attached that awesome material to the top part of the dress. Hopefully, I will get around to making a shirt out of it and eighties-ing up with high-waisted pants. Because if I can't do it now when can I?

Isn't funny how after a couple of years things you thought were heinous, you suddenly love again. Fashion is fickle, non? In a way, it makes you kind of hopeful. If pointless trends can reinvent themselves, in a way which makes them appealing to the masses once again, why can't people?

We Better Keep An Eye On This One. She's Tricky.

I'm a little bit freaked out right now. I just realised how often my boyfriend and I match. Our personalities match but even more strange is how often we turn up at each others houses wearing similar outfits. Just things like both wearing red, him a t-shirt and myself, a dress. Or this one time that I turned up at the pub wearing a grey t-shirt, jeans and Cons, and he was wearing the exact same thing. It was only weird because before that point he had never worn a grey t-shirt nor owned a grey t-shirt, he had bought it that night at the gig. It was funny, in a way. It's only a little bit depressing because now people comment on it. It's not like we do it on purpose (I think).

It's not as though we share clothes. That would be hilarious. Some of his cardigans I have considered stealing, jumpers too. I do own one shirt of his, a Taking Back Sunday one that shrunk. But to reiterate, we don't share clothing. However, cardigans like this one make me want to reconsider.
It's lovely isn't it? It was also on the first page when I image searched 'boyfriend cardigan' in Google. Google is the shit. I shouldn't write posts after drinking but I wasn't sure how long it had been since I'd posted. Sorry.

Snow.. I Love Snow Because It's So White

When I was young, I was a messy child. I'm still a bit of a mess, but not like I used to be. I'm talking food everywhere and dirty clothes. After a while, my mother learnt to put me in clothes that wouldn't show dirt. I didn't mind missing out on pastels because they make me look sick anyway but I used to be so jealous of the girls who got to wear all white frilly dresses and whereas mine were either red or floral.

As I got older and I started to buy my own clothing, everytime I fell in love with something that was white, I wouldn't buy it for fear of getting it dirty. So even now, I'm nearly twenty and I still have reservations about white.. But I love it. And I also love this outfit. It's divine.

I love how she makes the weirdly proportioned pants (they kind of remind me of clown pants), look really elegant. I also love the coloured footwear. It reminds me a lot of Peter Som's A/Wo7 collection, where he pairs monochrome with bright footwear and accessories. Just a little hint of colour.

I've never been a big fan of orange before but I love those shoes. Delia's has pretty cool patent coloured shoes, but the shipping to Australia is ridiculous.

We Shouldn't Worry About Being Able To Achieve Our Dreams As Long As We Have The Desire To Do It

When you were young (saying that makes me seem really old but I'm not), did it feel like you had all the time in the world? I remember spending hours doing the most stupidest shit and wasting so much time. I can't do that anymore, I feel like I have to squeeze every last hour out of my days. Funny thing is, I used to be happier. The only thing I can focus on now is the fact that I'm running out of time and I don't know why.

In other news, I love 43 things. It's the coolest website ever, like MySpace kinda, but with purpose. You sign up and write down things that you want to do, obviously the most you can have at once is 43. You can see who shares your goals, write blogs about them and how you are going about achieving them, comment on whether it was worth it or not and finally, cheer others people's 'things'. It's pretty sweet.

Finally, since this is meant to be a fashion blog, here is a picture of Patience from the Grates, wearing insanely cool tights.

If You Like To Make Things, Clap Your Hands!

I've always been a big fan of DIY, sewing your own clothes etc. There are two main reasons for this:
a) Living in a small town, you can never get what you want when you want it.
b) Being unique and creative is awesome.

Over the years I've made several thousand things, some I've worn once, others a thousand million times. But today I'll share only one:

I Like The Red Jacket also known affectionately as the Ricky Martin jacket and the Bollywood jacket.

  • The inspiration for this jacket is the jacket that Mary-Kate wore to some awards show a couple of years back (below).
  • It was made from one of my friends mum's favourite holiday jacket. Fabric - red velvet.
  • It's a fair bit different from the Olsen's jacket because I was too lazy to make a satin jacket and so just used the velvet and I also got a bit slack towards the end for all the beading. Still its pretty awesome.

ACTION SHOT!!!!! -->

This jacket is ridiculously embellished so you can only pair really plain things with it. And pretty much the only colour that works is white. However, if I couldn't be bothered and I have to look nice or dressed up, it's the simplest thing to throw on.

You'll Soon Grow Into Them, Titch

So, the Marc Jacobs show was yesterday or maybe even today Austalian time, and it was very interesting. There are certain designers who usually 'lead' trends and while lots of others are still playing with proportion, Jacobs appears to have 'pared' back this collection.

It really is very seventies, lots of hats and higher waistlines. Some ensembles reminded me of JLo (because of the hats) while others reminded me of the great Diane Keaton (with the suits and gloves and the awesome waistcoats).

Particularly, the outfit in the middle reminds of present day awards show Diane. I think it's the turtleneck. Some of the duchess satin dresses remind a little bit of last season Prada, but all in all, it could be said the change is in the air and Marc caught on quickly.

Some Days You're The Spider, Some Days You're The Fly. And It's A Fly Day For Me

Karen Walker is a gun. Not in a bad, killing people sort of way, rather in a Charlies Angel, shoot to maim and no one ever get's hurt kind of way. She fires off (sorry, couldn't help myself) collections that are quirky and original but still in touch with a) her label's look and b)current trends. Her latest collection for AW07 is said to be inspired by thirties comic book superheroine. Interestingly, there is nothing obvious that this character is her muse. There are only simple touches here and there, such as the sharp shoulder of the dress on the left or the heart applique seen on the cost below.

The most obvious would be the printed shirt above which says Karen to the Rescue. Other than that there are her signature brights and a lot of opaque stockings and hats. Mostly though, this collection has inspired me to buy yellow nailpolish.

A Mysterious Force Is Making People Dance Wildly And Threatening To Destroy Our Entire Way Of Life! :Must Be Rap Music."

Being a skinny white girl, I have always been fascinated by other rap culture. I love the big hoodies, the chains, the kicks. Mostly I dislike the music, but that's a matter of personal taste and also because I find it fairly denigrating and offensive towards females. But moving on...
The whole style/culture thing of rap has some very interesting shapes and with the whole popularity of Bape hoodies (even though they are more popularity in the whole 'club scene), the rap look or elements of it are fairly mainstream now a days. From the huge chains,

(which you can puchase online from Mr Bling), to t-shirts making reference to rap superstars NWA,

However, one look that I hope won't catch on (within the non-rap/hip hop community) is grills. I genuinely believe that this is one look that would be very difficult to attempt if you had very little credibility.

We Love Our Bread We Love Our Butter, But Most Of All We Love Each Other.

Of late, socks (knee-high, thigh-high) have become increasingly popular in fashion circles. Sadly, not in my small town, where I am regularly asked whether I am dressing up as Sailor Moon or going to a Naughty Schoolgirl party (creepy, I know).

Some people say that socks are hard to wear, but really they just have to be kept in a particular context. For example, this picture from Facehunter is a how-to on wearing socks. To be honest, I am completely in love with this whole outfit but it is the socks that really make it for me.

The outfit kinda has a whole innocent 'Madeline' vibe to it but it is made interesting and edgier by the scarf around the neck and how the proportions have been altered (socks above knee, high-waisted skirt, long sleeves poking out and slightly oversized jacket with awesome buttons). I also love how it all kind of matches but not exactly.

At New York Fashion Week, socks have also been used by several designers as accessories. In particular is Alice Roi, who stated that this collection was inspired by Madeline (hence the title of this post). Roi's Madeline isn't exactly all fun and games, pooh-poohing tigers and such. Rather, its a fairly dark collection (appropriate for the coming months). The socks are only mid-calf which is a hard length to wear but they give the outfits a certain something.

London's Calling...

I have to admit that NY Fashion Week just doesn't feel quite the same without the presense of little sister line, Marc by Marc. That being said, will it give London the hit of cool it so desperately wants? Any thoughts o-glossy-ones?

I LOVE NEON...

Channeling a little Sonia Rykiel, some Marc Jacobs and even a little Balenciaga (ah hell.... there may have even been some hints of Prada and YSL in there). ALL that and I still have to say that it was my favorite show of the day. The combinations of chunky tweeds in cropped silhouettes paired with neon bright satin, set DKNY on it's way. I think my heart almost stopped when Irina appeared in mensy, tweedy trousers and a chiffon scarf blouse emblazon with flourescent hearts. Berets and all - I'll take it.

Shine On

In what is only their third year, Ruffian showed a strong collection that seemed all grown up. Perhaps better known for their couture-like aesthetic, this season Ruffian kept it all American sportswear - with a twist. Luxurious fabrics such as glossy silk taffeta's, sequin stripes, cool jersey knits and even opaque black tights with a high gloss finish (where can I get those??) were in keeping with the strong future trend that started in Spring. My favourite though had to be the grey cashmere flannel A-line dress - when paired with those tights?! Flawless.

Easy Spirit

I don't know if I've ever taken much notice of NY designer Yigla Azrouel...but I really liked the simple sensibility of his Fall 07 collection. Tailored pini's, great coats and draped wool jersey jumpers that I would want to wear now. The collection as a whole seemed effortless and chic - even if it did pay a little homage to Chloe Fall 07?
