Balenciaga Exhibit

If at all possible, I highly recommend visiting the Musse de la Mode for the Balenciaga Exhibit. It's a retrospective of the great Cristobal Balenciaga's work, with a feature on Nicholas Ghesquiere's more current styles.

Overall I really loved the exhibit. It was truly intriguing in that Cristobal was cleary a man far ahead of his time - so many of his vintage styles still looking modern enough to wear today. That being said; obviously Nicholas Ghesquiere cleary feels the same way. He's recently been tralling the archives for "inspiration" for the current collecitons. After such a blockbuster Fall season for Nicholas Ghesquiere - you know I'll be watching closely for his Spring 07 show.

Thanks to good friend A for the fun time in Paris and the pics!

Kylie The Sci-Fi Dominatrix

Love it or hate - I'm telling you we're about to see a lot more PVC/latex in the coming months...

Thanks to Susie Bubble for the pic.

Sci-Fi Dominatrix

Now that I've got your attention...just wondering if S&M dominatrix is the new nautical??? If you hadn't already noticed there's enough vinyl, leather, studs, and references to the like to pique the interest of pretty much anyone. It seems that Dolce and Gabbana are either chanelling Thierry Mugler - or Marie Antoinette on crack. Other designers under the ball and chain - Gareth Pugh and Giles Deacon.

Inspiration?

Now don't think I'm hating on the genius that is Nicholas Ghesquiere...but after seeing the Balenciaga exhibit in Paris last week I think some pieces should almost be considered re-issues of Cristobal Balenciaga's original work. Check out my (bad) photo (on top) of Cristobal Balenciaga's early polka dot dress and then Nicholas Ghesquiere's redux from his Pre-Fall 06 Collection. Picture below courtesy of Balenciaga website.

Tees Me!

Based on the fact that I have a fashion blog - I guess it's somewhat safe to assume that I may also occasionly be a fashion victim? Call it what you want but I really kind of love these t-shirts by sylist/writer Henry Holland. With slogans like UHU GARETH PUGH, GILES DEACON GET YER FREAK ON, GIVE ME PAIN HEDI SLIMANE, GIVE ME A TICKLE RICHARD NICHOL and DO ME DAILY CHRISTOPHER BAILEY - they make me laugh!

The tees debuted during London Fashion Week on the backs of Gareth Pugh and Giles Deacon who cutely wore eachothers at the end of their shows. Of course they are now much sought after and only availbable at Dover St. Market in London - which really only makes me want one more! All they're missing now is...damn I have no idea what rhymes with ERDEM!

Pretty Please!

In his third season since winning Fashion Fringe, Erdem seemed to truly hit his stride. Erdem showed a concise and darling collection during London Fashion Week that seamlessly mixed classic British elements such as the trench coat, with more Parisian feeling airy botanical prints. Silhouettes included floating trapeze dresses, short shorts and swing jackets.

Who is the Erdem muse though? The mix of soft fabrics with sportier bold stripes, crisp Mac twills with floral prints kept the collection right on the edge of the modern girl's pulse.

Watch this space as I anticipate an Erdem epidemic in the next year. Stylist and celebs alike will surely be lining up.

Elke Kramer Rocks My Socks

Elke Kramer is a real Australian success story. By trade she is a graphic artist and has supplied awesome art for many of our local designers such as sass & bide, Willow and Tsubi. However, it is her jewellry collection that is truly marvellous. The first collection titled Exaltation of Skylarks Icecream Factory collection, pictured below, featured some of the most truly original shape and line combinations ever seen in jewellry. The collection was a huge success with the necklaces being seen on hipsters all down the East coast.

Her second collection is coming soon and is titled The Anti-Curse of Greyface: A Celebration of Chaos and Nonsense. Obviously she's quirky, she's kooky... but that's what I like so much. For once someone in the fashion industry has real quirks and is really interesting. Nothing about Ms. Kramer is fake or appears to be trying too hard and that is really refreshing.

Flower Power!

Is the flower destined to become the accessory du jour for Spring 07? From Marchesa to Rodarte,Marc Jacobs to Phillip Lim the spring runways have been a proverbial flower garden for the picking! Some subtle and some not so subtle (Rodarte??)...apparently a rose is a rose is a rose.

The Emptiness The Whole World Sings At Night

Luella Bartley has to be one of my favourite designers. To be completely honest, I don't really know why. Some designers I can say that it's their use of colour, their silhouette, their styling, the way they reinvent looks to make them modern or even their drama. All I know is everytime I see a Luella collection, I want it. I want it bad. This season is no different.

First things first, the shoes are amazing. Sure I'm doubtful that anyone would actually where them out and do them justice, but as seen with many designers this season (Marc by Marc, Karen Walker) the masculine shoe is very interesting and should not be ignored. Other than that the best parts of these collections are the awesome prints as seen on the T-shirt in the middle (above), the GEEK shirt and the incredible accessories. The chunky necklaces and bag charms added so much to the styling of this collection. Again, the skirt and T-shirt combination is prevalent.

The black and white pattern (above, left) also was very heavily featured but not many of my favourite looks featured it. The outfit in the middle, with the mixture of stripes, cardigans and pants tied by bow is my favourite outfit of the whole collection. It seems so simple, but it is put together so well. Finally, the dress on the right, is also very simple but teamed with the ankle boots and that incredible bag.

In conclusion, I love Luella.

We Summon By Candle, By Book and By Bell

Marc by Marc Jacobs, for me, was slightly less exciting than the Marc Jacobs collection. However, the dirty, dare I say it, grungey kind of layering vibe with quirky accessories is sure to be a winner on the streets. It's the kind of look that many try to wear but very few can wear successfully.

I love the dress on the left for the awesome 'bib' front and loose, relaxed shape. I am dying for a dress like this. The embellished shirt reminds of bad older womens fashion but for some reason now I really, really want one. Damn you, Marc! I pretty much added the picture on the left because those shoes are divine and I always love simple, gorgeous ensembles with stand-out shoes.

Of these looks, the black dress looks 'average to boring' but has the most amazing cut. The two skirt outfits are simply divine. The subtle mixing of prints and the slightly large t-shirts make this look really interesting and definately re-createable. I really doubt that 're-createable' is a word. Also the necklace? on the right is interesting.

I Have A Large Collection of Thunder That I Stole From Your Window Sill

You've got to love Marc Jacobs or at the very least have some kind of faux admiration for the way he makes people want things that two seconds ago they despised. He made what are basically oversized, dinky paste jewels that I used to stick on crowns in kindergarten, the most awesome accessory I have seen so far at S/S07. That and his styling is magical.

I was too young to appreciate deconstruction the last time it was in style, and the dress on the left makes me want to cut up and layer t-shirt dresses. The pants on the left on the other hand are just divine. They are probably best described as the daughter of capris and non-tacky harem pants.

These dresses are Marc's take on the volume trend that has been so prevalent in the past couple of seasons. I particularly like the way that he as interpreted it with a focus on the shoulders and torso rather than volume near the legs and waist.

PS. The neon-ish green catwalk is glorious and really offsets the neutral clothing. It also makes everyone aware of exactly whose collection they are admiring. I expect this one to be referenced EVERYWHERE.

And So It Begins?

I'm not one for introductions but I guess it's a bit retarded to just start posting.. So, I'm L. I live in Australia, where all our seasons are backwards. The only benefit of this situation is that it is slightly easier to be an early adopter.

My style icons are Jane Birkin and Jean Seberg. From current times, I love Chloe Sevigny, Cory Kennedy (Don't hit me!) and Lou Doillon. I like to draw ideas from ridiculous hipster fashion and my other passions (music, photography and art). At the moment, musically I'm obsessed with Alexisonfire's first album and the Arcade Fire.

I'm currently attending University in a small, slightly backwards town. I'm known as the girl that wears strange clothes to class. I fear getting a real job because it means that I will have to dress like normal people. This blog is basically for me to talk about things that I wish the people who lived around me appreciated.

Marc's Harem

In what was surely one of the highlights of NY Fashion Week, Marc Jacob's did not disappoint with his Spring 07 presentation. Set to the strains of Pashelbel (was this his dry humour?), models strutted out in a silhouette reminiscent of Poiret and the early 1900's. Uneven ruffles in the palest silks, baggy pleated harem pants (yes people harem pants), long bomber silhouettes, easy over-sized tees and dropped waistlines looked refreshing after seeing many versions of Chloe's Fall show redone in spring colours. And after the huge success of recent collections I dare say by the time Feb roles around...we may all be part of Marc's Harem.
